When reaching youth about sexual health issues, it is important to have messages coming from their own peers. This is why Safer Choices Northern Network embarked on a community project, funded by the Thompson Urban Aboriginal Strategy and supported by Burntwood Regional Health Authority, to give youth a voice about sexually transmitted infection awareness and prevention in the North.

A Thompson youth-made sexually transmitted infection awareness video, "Get It On!" premiered in April 2010. A comprehensive Facilitators' Guide has been developed in collaboration with Teen Talk, which we suggest you download. This guide assists users in providing basic sexual health education as it relates to the "Get It On!' video content.

You do not need to be an expert in sexual health education to provide the "Get it On!" educational session, however, you must tailor it to the needs of your learning group. The guide provides direction in teaching positive sexual health, specifically - STI awareness and prevention. Please note: The content of the video requires responsible follow-up discussion and more focused sexual health education. Teen Talk suggests that interactive activity-based learning within hour-long timeframes will increase the chance of the information getting to the youth and sticking. Those using the guide should familiarize themselves with it and prepare the ready-made activities to debrief the video as opposed to just lecturing the group.

The "Get It On!" video can be obtained from the BRHA for $20.00. If you would like a copy sent to you please contact - Krystal Bayer at 778-5382 or kbayer@brha.mb.ca.
