As a major employer in the North, the Burntwood Regional Health Authority provides services to approximately 47,000 individuals. Of these approximately 70% or 28,000 are of Aboriginal ancestry (Métis, non-status, status, Inuit) dispersed over an area of approximately 52% of the landmass of the Province of Manitoba. It is clear that the increase in recruitment and retention of Aboriginal staff is of major importance to the BRHA. Although not exclusive to the BRHA, the recruitment and retention of health care professionals has become a natural concern. The increasing Aboriginal population and emerging Aboriginal workforce in the Burntwood region will provide a reservoir of qualified candidates of future vacancies.

In 2001 through a partnership with Manitoba Aboriginal and Northern Affairs and Manitoba Education and Training, the Burntwood Regional Health authority embarked on the development of an Aboriginal Representative Workforce Strategy (AWRS).

Aboriginal Representative Workforce Objectives

  1. To recruit and promote employment opportunities for Aboriginal people within the Burntwood Region Health Authority. (Recruitment)
  2. To develop mechanisms of support to ensure maximum retention of Aboriginal employees within the Burntwood Regional Health Authority. (Retention)
  3. To promote careers in health of health related fields to Aboriginal people (particularly Aboriginal youth) within the Burntwood Regional Health Authority with emphasis on the importance of education. (Education)
  4. To continue Aboriginal Awareness and cultural diversity programs and workshops within the Burntwood Regional Health Authority. (Awareness)
  5. To build relationships within the Aboriginal population in the Burntwood Regional Health Authority. (Communication)
  6. To evaluate the effectiveness of the ARWS strategies. (Evaluation and Quality Improvement)

In 2001, out of a workforce of 450, there were 25 self-declared people of Aboriginal ancestry. This represented 5.5% of the workforce.
